Characteristics

– Cap white-gray to pale gray-brown.
– Tubes yellow, bruising blue.
– Stem yellow near the tubes, below beautifully carmine-red, with yellow-white reticulum.
– Flesh yellow-white, bruising blue, bitter in taste.

Ecology

It grows with beech and spruce in mixed forests, often appears early in the season.

Notes

Inedible due to the bitter taste.

Similar species

C. radicans is also bitter in taste but is not as intensely red on the stem.
