Characteristics

– Cap convex to expanded, smooth, somewhat hygrophanous, orange-brown, light yellow-brown when dry.
– Cap margin often with small yellow scales (remnants of the veil).
– Gills yellow to rust-brown, quite widely spaced.
– Stem lighter than the cap, brown-yellow, with thin, light yellow zigzag bands.

Ecology

Grows with spruce in moist swamp spruce forests and blueberry spruce forests.

Notes

Should be considered a poisonous mushroom despite uncertainty about its toxicity.

Similar species

C. gentilis is more slender, with a smooth cap surface and a stem that is not swollen towards the base.
C. rubellus is more reddish-brown and has darker and more widely spaced gills.
