Characteristics

– Cap initially violet, becoming more yellow-brown with age.
– Gills adnate to adnexed, initially yellow-brown, turning rust-brown with age.
– Stem violet, with a strong veil that also covers the gills in young specimens.
– Flesh yellow-brown, with a fruity scent.

Ecology

Grows in mossy coniferous forests throughout the country

Notes

Not a poisonous species, but should not be eaten.

Similar species

Can be confused with the edible Lepista nuda, that never has cobweb-like veil remnants on the cap edge or stem, nor does it have brown gills.
There are other violet Cortinarius species, for example C. camphoratus, which has violet flesh.
