- Cap hemispherical when young, then convex to expanded with a depressed centre, reddish-brown to purplish-brown, slightly sticky in wet weather.
- Gills adnexed to adnate, white to cream-coloured.
- Stem white, usually with a red tone on the lower part.
- Flesh white, with a peppery and sharply burning taste.

Grows with pine in coniferous forest, mainly in the southern parts of the Nordic region.
Similar species
A classic lookalike of Russula integra, which however lacks the red colours on the stem and has a mild nutty taste.
