Characteristics

- Cap convex to expanded, sticky in wet weather, bright red to blood-red.
- Gills adnexed to adnate, white.
- Stem white.
- Flesh white, brittle, with fruity smell and sharply burning taste.

Ecology

Grows in damp coniferous and mixed forest throughout the Nordic region, often among bog moss (Sphagnum).

Notes

The acrid taste makes Russula emetica inedible, it can cause temporary stomach upset but is not dangerously poisonous.
