Characteristics

– Cap grayish-yellow to yellow-brown.
– Tubes yellow, do not turn blue when bruised.
– Stem without a reticulate network, granular at the top, sometimes with red hues towards the base.
– Flesh smells like iodoform, resembling "band-aids", especially at the base of the stem.

Ecology

Grows with oak in deciduous forests and parks, often on calcareous and clayey soils.

Notes

Sometimes reported as edible but is so rare that it is not recommended for picking.

Similar species

Hemileccinum depilatum is similar but has a lumpy "hammered" cap surface.
Butyriboletus fechtneri differs in having bluing tubes, a reticulate network on the stem and a more grayish cap.
Butyriboletus appendiculatus has a yellow stem with a yellow reticulate network.
