Characteristics

– Cap silver-gray to almost white, felty, usually without pinkish spots.
– Tubes yellow, in young specimens the pores are also yellow but soon turns orange-red to blood-red.
– Stem yellow to red, often widened towards the base, covered with a red reticulate network.
– Flesh whitish, with faint bluish discoloration on cut surfaces, with a mild taste.
– Odor in older specimens pungent and unpleasant.

Ecology

Grows with oak on calcareous soil in deciduous forests and wooded meadows, primarily on Gotland and Öland. Rarely found under Tilia trees (Uppsala and Närke). Also grows with beech further south in Europe.

Notes

Toxic and causes severe nausea with vomiting and diarrhea.

Similar species

There are several rare and inedible mushrooms with red hues on the stem or tubes, such as R. legaliae.
