Characteristics
Ecology
Grows with birch in deciduous and mixed forest throughout the Nordic countries.
Notes
Edible, but in older specimens the cap flesh often becomes soft and spongy in texture, and the stem can become woody. A tip is to use only younger, firmer specimens for cooking.
Similar species
There are several similar Leccinum species with a brown cap. Typical for this species is that the flesh remains unchanged white in cut surfaces and blue-green spots are absent.
