Characteristics
Ecology
Grows with beech, oak, and hazel, often on calcareous clayey soil in sun-exposed, warm locations.
Notes
Contains the toxin orellanin, primarily causing kidney damage. The toxin is NOT destroyed by heating, and boiling does not remove the toxin.
Similar species
The closely related species, Cortinarius rubellus, is similar and contains the same toxin but can be distinguished by yellow zigzag bands on the stem.
