Characteristics

- Cap convex to expanded, mustard-yellow to dirty yellow, sometimes with a greenish-yellow tone.
- Gills white, faintly greying with age.
- Stem white, becoming more watery greyish with age.
- Flesh white, greying with age, with a more or less acrid taste.

Ecology

Grows with spruce and beech in coniferous forest and beech forest in the southern and central Nordic region.

Similar species

Russula claroflava has a more bright yellow cap colour and mild taste. Russula fellea has a warmer honey-yellow colour on the cap, and a honey-yellow tone on both gills and stem.
